Cicely Tyson

Cicely Tyson was born on 19 December 1924 in New York City to immigrant parents from the Caribbean island of Nevis, and worked initially as a secretary and fashion model before pursuing acting seriously, developing a distinctive, deliberate approach to selecting roles that would define her entire subsequent career and public reputation within the industry.

Tyson became known throughout her career for consistently and deliberately refusing roles she felt demeaned Black women or reinforced damaging stereotypes, a principled stance that limited the volume of work she accepted, particularly during periods when Hollywood offered Black actresses primarily narrow, often degrading character options, but which established her as an actress of exceptional integrity and selectivity.

Tyson earned an Academy Award nomination for Sounder (1972), portraying a sharecropper's wife with dignity and emotional depth, and won two Emmy Awards for her acclaimed performance in the television film The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman (1974), portraying a woman whose life spanned from slavery to the civil rights movement, a role showcasing her range across an extraordinary span of historical experience within a single performance.

Tyson continued a substantial career across film, television and theatre for decades, and became particularly known for her portrayal of historical and biographical Black women, consistently bringing gravity and authenticity to roles addressing significant chapters of Black American history and experience, treating her acting career as inseparable from a broader commitment to dignified representation.

Tyson received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2015 and, in 2018, an honorary Academy Award recognising her career's overall significance, and continued working actively into her nineties, publishing her memoir Just As I Am in January 2021, just days before her death, a work that provided a comprehensive account of her deliberate, principled approach to a career spanning nearly seven decades.

Tyson died on 28 January 2021 at age 96, and remains remembered as one of the most significant and principled figures in American acting history, her consistent refusal to accept roles she found demeaning having established a model of professional integrity that influenced how subsequent generations of Black actresses approached questions of representation and career selectivity within an industry still working through its own persistent limitations.
