Curtis Mayfield

Curtis Lee Mayfield was born on 3 June 1942 in Chicago, Illinois, and began singing gospel music in his grandmother's church as a child before co-founding the vocal group the Impressions as a teenager, developing exceptional songwriting and guitar skills that would define his subsequent career as one of soul music's most significant composer-performers.

Mayfield wrote and produced a series of civil rights-themed hits with the Impressions during the 1960s, including 'People Get Ready' and 'Keep on Pushing,' songs that became closely associated with the civil rights movement's soundtrack, their message of hope and perseverance resonating directly with the movement's broader goals during a pivotal period of American history.

Mayfield left the Impressions in 1970 to pursue a solo career, founding his own record label, Curtom Records, to maintain ownership and creative control over his work, a deliberate business decision reflecting his consistent commitment to artistic and financial independence throughout his career.

In 1972 Mayfield composed the soundtrack for the film Super Fly, a work that transcended its source material's blaxploitation genre origins to become one of the most acclaimed and socially conscious albums in soul music history, its songs providing sophisticated commentary on drug addiction and urban poverty rather than simply celebrating the film's surface narrative, a nuanced artistic achievement that distinguished Mayfield's work within the genre.

Mayfield continued a substantial recording career throughout the 1970s and 1980s, though a devastating 1990 accident, in which a lighting rig fell on him during an outdoor concert, left him paralysed from the neck down; remarkably, Mayfield continued recording music afterward, using specialised recording techniques to overcome his paralysis, releasing his final album in 1996.

Mayfield died in 1999 from complications related to his injuries, and remains widely regarded as one of the most significant songwriters and musicians in soul music history, his combination of gospel-rooted musicality, sophisticated social commentary and consistent commitment to creative independence establishing a legacy directly influencing generations of subsequent musicians across soul, funk and hip-hop.
