William Augustus Hinton studied at the University of Kansas and Harvard University, earning his medical degree in 1912 despite being denied clinical training opportunities available to his white classmates because of his race. He began his career in Boston's public health laboratories, where he specialised in bacteriology.
Hinton's most significant contribution came in the field of syphilis diagnosis. Working meticulously to eliminate false positives that plagued existing tests, he developed the Hinton Test in the 1920s, a diagnostic method praised for its exceptional accuracy that became widely adopted, including by the US Public Health Service.
Despite his scientific standing, Hinton frequently avoided publicity about his race, at times teaching Harvard courses for years before students or colleagues realised he was Black, and reportedly declining opportunities and honours that would have required disclosing it — a reflection of the racial climate he had to navigate even at the height of his career.
In 1949, Hinton was appointed a full clinical professor at Harvard Medical School, becoming the first Black professor in the university's history, a recognition that arrived only after decades of research, teaching and clinical leadership that had already reshaped public health practice nationally.
