📖 Biography

Angenor de Oliveira, known by his nickname Cartola, meaning 'top hat', was born on 11 October 1908 in Rio de Janeiro, and grew up in the hillside favela of Mangueira, where he became immersed in the city's emerging samba culture.

On 28 April 1928 Cartola helped found the Estação Primeira de Mangueira samba school, serving as its master of harmony, and suggested that the school adopt the green and pink colours that have remained among the most revered symbols in the world of samba carnival ever since.

Alongside his lifelong friend and songwriting partner Carlos Cachaça, Cartola composed hundreds of sambas throughout the 1930s and 1940s, becoming a central figure in transforming samba from local street music into a defining symbol of Brazilian national identity.

After disappearing from the public samba scene for over a decade, Cartola was discovered working as a humble labourer and returned to music, and in 1963, with his wife Dona Zica, opened Zicartola, a bar and restaurant in downtown Rio that became the most important meeting point of its era, bridging traditional sambistas with the emerging new generation of Brazilian popular musicians.

Cartola's compositions have been recorded by virtually every major interpreter of Brazilian music, and he continued performing and composing until his death in 1980; he is remembered as one of the most important songwriters in the history of samba and a foundational figure of the Mangueira samba school, one of Rio's most celebrated carnival institutions.
