Craig Ashley David was born on 5 May 1981 in Southampton, Hampshire, to a Jewish English mother and a Grenadian father who worked as a carpenter, growing up on the Holyrood estate before gaining early exposure singing with British group Damage.
David's breakthrough came providing vocals for UK garage duo Artful Dodger, whose single 'Rewind' reached number two in late 1999 and thrust the then-teenage David into the national spotlight as a rising voice in Britain's burgeoning garage scene.
At just 19, David released his debut album Born to Do It in August 2000, which produced four consecutive top ten singles including 'Fill Me In' and '7 Days', eventually selling over 8 million copies worldwide and achieving multi-platinum status in more than 20 countries.
Born to Do It became the 45th-fastest-selling album in UK chart history and came second in a 2009 MTV poll for Greatest Album Ever, behind only Michael Jackson's Thriller, establishing David as one of the defining voices of early-2000s British R&B and UK garage.
David continued releasing albums across more than two decades, including Slicker Than Your Average and a career resurgence in the 2010s and 2020s, and in August 2022 performed alongside Coldplay at Wembley Stadium, reflecting his enduring status as one of Britain's most beloved homegrown R&B artists.
