Francis Morgan Ayodele Thompson was born on 30 July 1958 in London to a Nigerian father and a Scottish mother, and made his decathlon debut in Cwmbrân, Wales, at age 16, setting a British junior record that qualified him for the British Olympic team that same year.
Spotted by coach Bob Mortimer, who suggested the ten-event discipline to a young Thompson who had never attempted six of its events, Thompson embraced the challenge, later explaining that 'in the decathlon, nothing is won ahead of time'.
Thompson won his first Olympic gold at the 1980 Moscow Games aged just 21, setting a world record of 8,648 points that same season, and would go on to remain undefeated in the decathlon for nine consecutive years, from 1978 to 1988.
At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Thompson successfully defended his title in a fierce rivalry with West Germany's Jürgen Hingsen, scoring 8,797 points to become only the second man in history, after America's Bob Mathias, to win back-to-back Olympic decathlon gold medals, a feat since matched only by Ashton Eaton.
Across his career Thompson broke the decathlon world record four times, won three Commonwealth titles, two European Championships and the inaugural World Championship gold in 1983, holding every major decathlon title simultaneously; he retired in 1992 due to a persistent hamstring injury, having been awarded the CBE in recognition of a career widely regarded as the greatest in decathlon history.
- Won back-to-back Olympic decathlon gold medals, 1980 and 1984
- One of only three men in history to win consecutive Olympic decathlon titles
- Broke the decathlon world record four times
- Won three Commonwealth titles and two European Championships
- World Champion decathlete, 1983
- A coach's suggestion can launch an unlikely path to greatness. Thompson had never attempted six of the decathlon's ten events before his coach suggested the discipline, yet became its greatest champion.
- Consistency across nine years defines true dominance. Thompson's unbeaten run from 1978 to 1988 across every major decathlon competition set a standard of sustained excellence rarely matched in any sport.
