📖 Biography

Johan Henri Eliza Ferrier was born on 12 May 1910 in Paramaribo, Suriname, then a Dutch colony, and built an early career as a teacher, trade union leader and radio pioneer, helping found the Creole-based National Party of Suriname in 1946.

Ferrier briefly served as Prime Minister of Suriname from 1955 to 1958 under Dutch colonial administration, before being appointed Governor of Suriname in 1968, the final Dutch-appointed governor to hold the post before the country's independence.

As Governor, Ferrier worked alongside Prime Minister Henck Arron through the delicate negotiations that led to Suriname's independence from the Netherlands, a process that required navigating the competing interests of the country's ethnically diverse population.

When Suriname achieved full independence on 25 November 1975, Ferrier was sworn in as the nation's first President, a largely ceremonial role at the time that nonetheless placed him at the symbolic heart of Suriname's transition to sovereign statehood.

Ferrier served as President until 1980, when a military coup forced his resignation; he later published his memoirs, Last Governor, First President, and died in the Netherlands in 2010 at age 99, just after what would have been his 100th birthday, honoured that year with the launch of the Johan Ferrier Fund.
