📖 Biography

John George Melvin Compton was born on 29 April 1925 on the island of Canouan in Saint Vincent, and was brought to Saint Lucia in September 1939, where he was raised and would build the political career that defined the island's modern history.

Compton trained as a lawyer in Britain before returning home and entering Saint Lucian politics, rising to become Chief Minister as the island governed itself under British rule from 1964, and leading Saint Lucia through its transition toward full independence.

When Saint Lucia gained full independence from Britain on 22 February 1979, Compton became the nation's first Prime Minister, and went on to serve in the role across three separate periods spanning more than three decades of the island's political life.

As Prime Minister, Compton worked to develop Saint Lucia's tourism industry and banana export economy, steering the small island nation through the economic challenges facing newly independent Caribbean states while maintaining remarkable electoral resilience across a career that outlasted multiple generations of political rivals.

Compton returned to office for a final term in 2006 at age 81, serving until his death in September 2007; he remains Saint Lucia's longest-serving Prime Minister and is remembered as the dominant figure in shaping the island's path to and through independence.
