Mark Anthony Essien was born on 18 December 1980 in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, and was raised attending his mother's own kindergarten school before completing secondary education locally and pursuing a background in computer science and software engineering.
While studying for his Master's degree in Germany in 2012, Essien researched South American and Asian models of established hotel booking agencies, purchasing a domain name and a list of hotels to tentatively build an initial listings platform.
The domain attracted enough traffic to convince Essien the concept had genuine potential, prompting his return to Nigeria, where he continued expanding hotel listings in Calabar, partnering with a friend to photograph properties and sign agreements with hotels directly.
In 2013 Essien formally founded Hotels.ng, enabling bookings as soon as sufficient listings were secured; press coverage of the platform caught the attention of Iroko TV founder Jason Njoku, whose Spark.ng made a first investment of $75,000, prompting Essien to relocate the business to Lagos.
Hotels.ng has since grown into Nigeria's leading hotel booking platform, listing thousands of properties across hundreds of cities, and Essien has continued building Nigeria's technology ecosystem, co-investing in the events booking platform OgaVenue and becoming a widely recognised figure in the country's tech sector.
- Founded Hotels.ng, Nigeria's leading online hotel booking platform
- Platform lists thousands of hotels across hundreds of Nigerian cities
- Secured early investment from Nigeria's tech ecosystem pioneers
- Co-invested in the events booking platform OgaVenue
- Widely featured in global publications covering Nigeria's tech ecosystem
- Validating an idea with minimal resources can justify a bigger leap. Essien's simple test listings platform, built while still a student, generated enough traffic to convince him to return home and build the business properly.
- Hands-on technical skill can carry a founder through the earliest stages. Essien's own computer science background let him build Hotels.ng's early technology himself before hiring a team.
