Michael Lee-Chin was born on 3 January 1951 in Port Antonio, Jamaica, the first of nine children born to Black and Chinese-Jamaican parents. He worked in hotel landscaping from age 14, later graduating from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, with a degree in civil engineering in 1974, having emigrated to Canada in 1970.
Unable to find engineering work, Lee-Chin worked briefly as a bouncer before entering financial services as an investment advisor. In 1983, he secured a $500,000 loan from Continental Bank of Canada to buy a concentrated stake in Mackenzie Financial Group, an investment that appreciated more than sevenfold within four years — a formative demonstration of the disciplined, highly concentrated investment philosophy that would define his career.
In 1987, Lee-Chin used those proceeds to purchase a small Kitchener-based investment firm called Advantage Investment Council for $200,000, renaming it AIC and growing it into a fund managing roughly $6 billion in assets. In 2002, his company Portland Holdings acquired a 75% stake in the National Commercial Bank of Jamaica, becoming its Executive Chairman and transforming it into the country's largest financial institution. He became one of the first Black people listed on Forbes' World's Billionaires ranking in 2001, and has since donated tens of millions to institutions including the Royal Ontario Museum, where the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal bears his name.
