📖 Biography

Rita Dove graduated summa cum laude from Miami University in Ohio as a Presidential Scholar, one of the top hundred high school graduates in the country, before studying as a Fulbright Scholar in Germany and earning her MFA from the University of Iowa's prestigious Writers' Workshop.

Dove published her first poetry collection, The Yellow House on the Corner, in 1980, and quickly established herself as one of the most distinctive voices in American poetry, known for work that moved fluidly between personal, historical, and mythological subject matter. Her 1986 collection Thomas and Beulah, a sequence of poems loosely based on her grandparents' lives, won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1987, making her only the second African American to win the award in that category.

In 1993, at age 40, Dove was appointed United States Poet Laureate, becoming both the youngest person and only the second African American ever to hold the position. She used her tenure to expand public engagement with poetry, championing accessibility and diverse voices within American letters. Dove has continued publishing extensively across poetry, drama, and essays, and has taught for decades at the University of Virginia, while receiving numerous additional honours including the National Humanities Medal and the National Medal of Arts.
