Teddy Pendergrass

Theodore DeReese Pendergrass was born on 26 March 1950 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and began singing gospel music in church as a child before joining Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes as their drummer and eventually lead vocalist, his deep, distinctive voice becoming the group's defining feature on hits including 'If You Don't Know Me by Now' during the early 1970s.

Pendergrass left the Blue Notes in 1976 to pursue a solo career, quickly establishing himself as one of the era's most significant romantic soul vocalists, his sensual, emotionally intense performing style building a substantial following, particularly among women, that made his concerts, including women-only performances, a notable cultural phenomenon of the late 1970s.

Pendergrass achieved substantial commercial success through the late 1970s with a string of platinum-selling albums, becoming one of the first Black solo artists to achieve consecutive platinum albums, and built a reputation as one of soul music's most significant sex symbols and vocal talents during this period.

In March 1982 Pendergrass was involved in a serious car accident that left him paralysed from the chest down, a devastating injury that appeared likely to end his singing career entirely given the significant impact on his breath control and physical capacity central to his previous vocal style.

Pendergrass, remarkably, returned to recording and performing following extensive rehabilitation, adapting his approach to accommodate his paralysis and continuing a substantial recording career throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s, a genuine testament to his artistic determination and technical adaptation following circumstances that would have ended most performers' careers entirely.

Pendergrass became a significant advocate for spinal cord injury research and disability rights following his accident, founding the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance to support individuals with spinal cord injuries, using his platform to advance both awareness and research funding for a condition he had direct, lived experience navigating. He died in 2010, and remains remembered both for his substantial contribution to 1970s soul music and for his extraordinary resilience in continuing his career after paralysis.
